A single turbocharger can carry three or four different numbers: the vehicle maker's OE number, the turbo manufacturer's own part number, and sometimes an aftermarket or rebuilder's reference. If you can't cross-reference them confidently, you either overpay for mislabelled parts or wait days for someone else to do the matching. This is the exact four-step method our team runs every day on customer inquiries.
Know which numbering system you're looking at
| System | Typical format | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Garrett | 6-digit frame + 4-digit dash (or 75xxxx-x) | 452204-0001, 717478-0001 |
| Holset | 7-digit number, often with -ES suffix | HX35W · 3592766 |
| MHI / IHI | 5+5 digits | 49135-02600 · VI43 |
| Vehicle OE | Maker-specific long codes | e.g. 03G253xxx (VW), 28231-xxxxx (Hyundai/Kia) |
| BEFRAG | CAT-series oriented aftermarket range | see BEFRAG Diesel Parts |
The 4-step cross-reference method
- Read the nameplate first. The compressor housing plate carries the turbo maker's number — this is your anchor. OE numbers alone can hide the real turbo behind a supersession chain.
- Map the turbo number to the OE reference both ways. A match is only reliable when it resolves in both directions — turbo number → OE and OE → turbo number. One-way matches hide the "same frame, different trim" traps.
- Confirm the application. Check engine code, displacement and model year. Two engines can share a turbo family but differ in actuator, housing orientation or nozzle ring.
- Verify visually. Photos of the compressor wheel, turbine side, flange positions and actuator catch the last 5% — especially on VNT units where trim differences are invisible on paper.
Traps that cost people money
- Aftermarket-stamped nameplates. Rebuilt units often wear a rebuilder's stamp, not the original Garrett/Holset number.
- Twins and pairs. Bi-turbo setups use left- and right-hand versions of the same frame — a "matching number" can still be the wrong side.
- Superseded OE numbers. Vehicle makers replace OE numbers over the years; the current number may not be what's stamped on a 10-year-old unit.

FAQ
The turbo manufacturer's number stamped on the nameplate. OE numbers are one step removed and can be superseded or shared across variants.
Usually yes — compressor wheel, turbine side, flanges and actuator identify most units. For VNT turbos we may ask for one extra shot of the nozzle ring.
Yes. Our catalogue is cross-mapped across Garrett, Holset, MHI, IHI, BorgWarner and OE systems, and we confirm every match before quoting.
